Our Story

At Tough Mama Fitness, we understand how intimidating if can be to get started. Don't worry, we are here to help keep it simple. Our studio is Mama owned and led. We have the expertise to support you in pregnancy, postpartum and beyond and even have our LEGENDS (50+) program to keep you moving across your lifespan.

Tough Mama Fitness is studio for women who want to prioritize strength training and conditioning. Our studio is child-friendly and welcomes your kids at all of our regularly scheduled classes.


Our private studio is INSIDE the global gym: Evolve Strength in Seton. There is plenty of parking out front.


Great question! This varies month by month depending on our programming. Overall you can expect to see versions of the primary movement patters like squat, lunge, hinge, push, pull and press as well as core specific exercises and heart rate raising activities (i.e., cardio). 


Absolutely not. We all start somewhere. Each exercise prescribed can be adapted, modified, progressed or regressed as needed so that it is JUST RIGHT in regards to intensity for YOU and your body. We have a saying in the studio: "Eyes on your own barbell" and it means that your fitness journey is yours alone. No need to try keep up, compete or prove anything. You get to decide how you feel at each class/session.


Definitely! Staying active in pregnancy has many benefits. Adaptations may be required to accommodate your growing belly, core and pelvic floor but rest assured we will help keep you moving in an empowered manner.


Congratulations! We welcome women postnatally. Exercise and a community is so powerful and healing. We do ask that you have received clearance from your care provider to resume fitness activities prior to beginning with us. We will start slow and progressively increase challenge/intensity depending on how YOU are responding post-baby. Everyone is different and our training must reflect this.


We strive to let this studio start to feel like home. With small class sizes, children being welcome and progressive exercise programming we love being the facilitator for change. New to fitness, returning to fitness, experienced in fitness - you are welcome here. We want to support you in your journey of fitness which we hope lasts across your lifespan. There's no pressure here. Come as you are - that is more than good enough.


Michelle Coels has been a coach and clinical exercise physiologist since graduating with a Bachelor or Kinesiology in 2009. She has experience working with acute injuries, chronic pain, pre and postnatal challenges like prolapse and diastasis recti. She believes that movement can be medicine, motion is lotion and fitness is great act of self-care. Your fitness journey is yours alone and she would love to walk alongside you in that.


Legends is our 50+ programming for women. It's never too late to start and it's so beneficial to keep moving across our lifespan. This program prioritizes strength and conditioning. We encourage mobility, agility and weight bearing activities to promote strong muscles and bones and to help remain capable as we age. No children attend these classes.

Our 3-session series of 1-1 coaching helps prepare new members for our group coaching program. We will review form with all major movement patterns, learn about scaling and pacing and how to choose the level you work at for greater success in a group program.

Classes are small and tailored to each participant.Whether you are new to fitness, returning or a life-long mover you are welcome here.
